users' needs research
We wanted to find out what are the main problems and needs of medical students. Through research, we also wanted to verify the design assumptions and set the project development directions.
We decided to conduct interviews with users to better understand their needs, problems, motivations, and behaviors.
First, we conducted workshops with the client. It was an opportunity to get to know the project’s assumptions and ideas about the implementation. We also wanted to collect and organize our knowledge about the project.
During the workshop, using the various methods and exercises, we gathered the necessary information.
We used such methods as:
- empathy map
- 5 whys.
Workshops allowed us to collect all the necessary information about the project and we learned a lot about the users.
The collected data allowed us to prepare interview scenarios.
Interviews with users
Thanks to the interviews we wanted to know:
- What are the current behaviors, experiences, motivations, goals, and frustrations of medical students
- How they currently use technology and what methods of learning they currently use
- What applications they use and what is their opinion about them
- What helps or bothers them during learning
- Which learning methods are best for them and bring the best results
10 students from 3 different universities took part in the research. One interview lasted about 2 hours.
The most important insight from the research was the observation that there is a lot of what can be done when it comes to studying medicine in Poland. Students are expecting a solution dedicated to their specific field of knowledge. The most important value for students is the reliability of the solution. Now they are using foreign solutions that don’t always fit our polish reality.
Thanks to the interviews we were able to create personas. Based on research results we could decide which group will be our main group of users and what features will suits best for their needs.
The result of our work was the Research Report. It contained a summary of our work – a description of used methodology and the course of research. The customer received detailed information about users, their needs, frustration, and preferences. The report also includes tips on what users might find interesting and needed. The results of the research have made it possible to better understand what medical students are facing and how they can be helped. This knowledge has helped to create new solutions and important functionalities for users
On this basis, we have developed design trends for the client, which became the basis for further work on the application.
The report was presented and discussed in detail during the meeting with the working team.
What have We learned from this project?
Research results helped better understood what students of medicine have to struggle with. During the project, we learned how important is the skillful argumentation (arguments supported by research results) of changes in the project. Although it is not always possible to convince the client to the suggested changes, solid argumentation helps.
It was also the first project that took place in several places. Workshops and research meetings took place in Gliwice and Łódź, and some of the interviews were conducted in a remote form. So we learned how to deal with this type of work model.
