users' needs research
The goal of the project was to find out what are the main problems and needs of medical students. Through research, we also wanted to verify the design goals and to set the direction of the project development.
We decided to conduct interviews with the users to understand their needs, problems, motivations, and behaviors.
First, we held workshops for the client. It was an opportunity to get to know the project goals and the client’s ideas for their realization. We also wanted to gather and organize our knowledge about the project.
During the workshops, using various methods and exercises, we gathered the necessary information.
We used the following methods:
- empathy map,
- 5 whys.
These actions allowed us to gather all the necessary information about the project and users of the developing solution in a convenient form.
The collected data allowed us to prepare interview scenarios.
Interviews with users
Through the interviews we wanted to learn the following:
- What are the current behaviors, experiences, motivations, goals, and frustrations of medical students?
- How do they currently use technology and what methods of learning do they currently use?
- What applications do they use and what is their opinion on them?
- What helps or bothers them while learning?
- Which learning methods are best for them and have the best results.
Ten students from three different universities took part in the research. Each interview lasted about two hours.
The most important data obtained from the research was the fact that there are a lot of areas that could be improved when it comes to studying medicine in Poland. Students expect a solution tailored to their specific field of expertise. The most important value for students is the reliability of the solution. Currently, they are using foreign solutions that do not always translate into Polish reality.
Thanks to the interviews, we were able to create users’ personas. Based on the research results, we were able to distinguish the main user group and choose features that would suit their learning needs best.
The result of our work was a Research Report. It contained a summary of our work – a description of the used methodology and course of the research. The customer received detailed information about the users, their needs, frustrations, and preferences. The report also included tips on what the users might find interesting and necessary.
The results of the research made it possible to better understand what medical students are facing and how they can be helped. This knowledge helped create new solutions and important functionalities for the users.
On this basis, we developed design trends for the client, which became the foundation for further work on the application.
The report was presented and discussed in detail during a meeting with the working team.
What have We learned from this project?
The research results helped us better understand what students of medicine struggle with. During the project, we learned how important it is to use skillful argumentation (arguments supported by research results) for any recommended changes in the project. Although it is not always possible to convince the client to the suggestions, solid argumentation helps.
It was also the first project that took place in several locations. The workshops and research meetings took place in Gliwice and Łódź, and some of the interviews were conducted remotely. Thus, we have learned how to deal with this type of work model.
